supported independent living

SUPPORTED INDEPENDENT LIVING

The term Supported Independent Living, otherwise known as SIL, refers to professional care provided to people who have a disability that need support to live independently.  Whether a participant is to live on their own or in shared housing, SIL aims to boost their quality of life and freedom as much as possible.

Living support can include assistance with daily tasks and activities that may be difficult for a participant to complete on their own, including cooking meals, personal care tasks, medication management, help with transportation, support with social and recreational activities and more.

Ability House Support Staff can assist with creating a personalized support plan by considering the participants living goals, needs, preferences and funding.  The goal is for a participant with a disability to live independently whilst also building on their own living skills to enhance their daily life.

What are the Benefits of Supported Independent Living?

There are many benefits of NDIS supported living, but perhaps the most vital is the ability for people with disabilities to be supported to live as independently as possible. The goal of SIL is to provide people with disabilities with methods and techniques to establish their own unique lifestyle. Whether the participant has a recent or lifelong disability, A is able to provide them with the tools they need to live as happy and productive a life as possible.

Who is eligible for Supported Independent Living funding?

To access SIL services, you must have a current NDIS plan with allocated funding for SIL included in your plan or Disability Support for Older Australians Program (DSOA) funding.

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) has a set criterion to access funding for SIL based on ‘reasonable and necessary supports. To be eligible for SIL funding, you must:

  • Provide evidence that you are unable to live without 24/7 supports. This is recognized through a Functional Assessment Report (FAR) undertaken by an Allied Health professional.
  • Provide an Identifying Housing Solution’s report by a support coordinator.

SIL eligibility must also consider any informal supports provided by family members, carers, networks, and the community. It is vital that the supports are effective, tailored, and beneficial to the individual. At Ability House, we can help you determine your eligibility for funding.

Signs that show you need SIL?

You find it challenging to manage daily living tasks independently, including personal care.

  • You feel socially isolated or have limited opportunities for social interaction and community engagement.
  • You have a desire to live more independently, make your own decisions, and have control over your daily routines.
  • You have safety concerns related to your living situation, such as inaccessible or unsafe accommodation.
  • You are currently residing in a residential care facility, group home, and wish to transition to a more independent living arrangement.

If you find yourself in the aforementioned situations, then you are the right person to choose SIL
